The above article was originally published on January 16, 1909 when Columbus was officially proclaimed “The Arch City.” The current arches that grace the Short North pay tribute to the arches that decorated our city over 100 years ago. How Columbus came to be called "The Arch City"

Because Ohio had more Army veterans (per capita) than just about any other state after the Civil War, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) held its twenty-second annual convention in Columbus in 1888. Huge tent cities were put up to hold the more than 250,000 people who arrived. For safety and security, Columbus erected wooden arches downtown that were lit by gaslights. In the largest single parade of Union soldiers since the end of the Civil War, 90,000 veterans marched under the Columbus arches. The arches remained for several years to commemorate this important event.

In the years following, horse-drawn street cars were converting to electrified streetcars. Columbus Railway, Power and Light Co. was looking for a way to power its street cars and hearkened back to the iconic image of the arches at the Grand Army encampment. In 1896, a network of arches was constructed in the core of downtown.

On January 16, 1909, The Ohio State Journal reported that a resolution was adopted by the directors of the board of trade to officially call Columbus “The Arch City.”

The arches have played a major role in Columbus’s history from the Civil War through the days of electric street cars. To honor this rich history, we chose to change our practice from Northeast Family Dental to Arch City Dental. We are proud of our locations in Westerville and Grandview and are excited to continue growing our practice in “The Arch City.”
